Title: Media and Marketing Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt                            

Manager: Chief Development Officer

Compensation: $61,500 annually


 Job Description  

Purpose

The Media and Marketing Manager serves as part of a collaborative Marketing and Events Team within the Development Department. This role will work closely across the organization and will be responsible to identify, secure, and manage local, regional and national media opportunities that advance Roadrunner Food Bank’s visibility, raise awareness of the organization’s work across the state, and inspire community engagement and support. The position will also create and distribute high-quality communications content for news releases, digital media, newsletters, and other communication avenues and is responsible for synthesizing internal data to create informed marketing narratives and statistics for storytelling.

Key Result Area #1 – Media Relations and Earned Media Strategy

·      Serve as primary media relations lead and day-to-day media contact.

·      Proactively pitch story ideas for interviews, coverage and write op-eds to local, regional and national media outlets, including stories in collaboration with Roadrunner’s service-area hunger-relief partners when appropriate.

·      Build and maintain strong relationships with reporters, producers, editors and assignment desks across all outlets (TV, Radio, Print and Digital).

·      Identify newsworthy angles tied to Roadrunner’s work on hunger relief, food insecurity, public policies, disasters, seasonal trends and community needs without prompting.

·      Assist and participate in crisis communication planning and execution.

·      Respond quickly to breaking news, media inquiries and emerging opportunities.

·      Serve as the organization’s on-air spokesperson, utilizing other issue-expert staff members and Executive Team members as appropriate.

 

Key Result Area #2 – Campaign and Event Publicity

·      Create and write press releases, media advisories, and talking points for media.

·      Create fact sheets, talking points and background material about the campaign or event as needed for other organization staff and issue-experts as needed/requested.

·      Elevate key fundraising activities such as Feeding America cause marketing campaigns, food bank initiatives, and donor match periods.

 

 Key Result Area #3 – Digital and Non-Traditional Media Opportunities

·      Identify earned media opportunities across all digital platforms, podcasts, livestreams, blogs and influencer partnerships.

·      Collaborate with the Digital Marketing Specialist to align earned media with brand-owned social media channels.

·      Manage and audit website content on regular intervals including reviewing and updating Google/Bing business information.

·      Review and respond to organizational Google Reviews.


Key Result Area #4 – Marketing Material Creation

·      Responsible for managing monthly e-newsletter and quarterly printed newsletter production by transforming complex issues into compelling stories and working with other team members for additional content.

·      Develop and manage annual media relations calendar aligned with organizational priorities and the department’s annual communications calendar.

·      Synthesize internal data to create informed marketing narratives, donor impact reports, and other key statistics for storytelling by the Development Team.


Key Result Area #5 – Reporting and Data Management

·      Track, monitor and analyze media coverage; produce monthly and campaign specific reports for Director of Integrated Marketing Communications and CDO.

·      Document media contracts, pitches, and placements in Salesforce.

·      Use collected data insights to refine pitching strategies and improve results over time.

·      Contribute to a shared team media library with stories, comments, images, and audio for use in both print and digital formats, organizing and optimizing assets to support efficient search, retrieval, and cross-departmental use.

 

Key Result Area #6 – Collaboration and Teamwork

·      Develop strong and collaborative working relationships with members of the Development Team to ensure engagement is coordinated.

·      Work cross-functionally with all departments prioritizing the needs of the organization.

·      Serve as a trusted advisor on media strategies.

·      Create strong cross-departmental lines of communication, especially in time-sensitive media needs (which may occur outside of traditional work hours).

·      Provide media training for Executive Team members, key issue experts and organizational leads as appropriate.

•   Provide general communications support as part of the team with regard to writing, graphic design, photo/video backup, data entry, giving tours, and public speaking.

•   Support email and call groups such as the Development Support inbox and food assistance calls. Provide staffing support to large-scale ‘all hands-on deck’ events and initiatives that impact the overall development program or organization.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications

·      Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or an equivalent level of directly related experience to this position.

·      Minimum of three years of experience in media relations, public relations, or journalism.

·      Proven experience in securing earned media placements.

·      Strong writing skills and the ability to transform complex issues into compelling media stories.

·      Experience in database maintenance, entering and maintaining current and accurate records in specialized digital or CRM platforms.

·      Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams or Zoom virtual platforms.

·      Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of effective mass communication principles, processes and techniques, and SEO best practices.

·      Familiarity with email marketing platforms, content management systems, and graphic design. Basic knowledge of photography and capturing video or audio elements for use.

·      Ability to interact effectively and professionally with other staff, clients, volunteers, agency representatives, and the general public.

·      Travel around the state required. Company vehicle or mileage reimbursement will be provided. Must have valid driver’s license and active car insurance.

·      Ability to work a flexible schedule with little to no notice including early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.

 

Preferred Qualifications

·      Proficiency in multiple languages including English and Spanish.

·      Experience in crisis communications.

·      Previous experience working in a nonprofit environment.

·      Salesforce Experience.

·      Adobe Creative Suite Experience.

 Physical Environment

·      Work environment is a combination of hybrid/office (70%) and in the field (30%).

·      When in office environment, work is primarily in front of a computer screen with repeated finger motions and extensive phone use. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, sometimes between floors and across large areas of the building. When out of the office, the employee may be required to participate in outdoor activities or events which are subject to exposure to weather conditions.
