Title: Director of Transportation

FLSA Status: Exempt                       

Manager: Chief Operating Officer     

Compensation: $95,000.00/annually - Relocation Funds Available


  Job Description  

 

The Director of Transportation is responsible for: assisting the Director of Operations with implementing, managing, creating, communicating vital leadership directives; enforcing staff policies and procedures; maintaining the security and safety of all personnel; keeping a well maintained and compliant fleet; maintaining an efficient and effective team. 

 

Key Result Area #1 – Employee Management   Level II  

Ensures schedule reliability with for Transportation department and special events 

1 Year 

Staffs the transportation department so as to be continually prepared to carry out plans necessary to meet the food banks mission while adjusting for workload fluctuations. 

1 Year 

Monitors daily employee performance using telematics and reports, then creates corrective improvement plan for employees not meeting their goals. 

6 Months 

Provides initial training to staff and re-training when necessary; uses Roadrunner Food Bank’s Evaluation process to communicate goals and performance to all subordinates 

1 Year 

Uses driving test to determine skill level prior to the beginning of the onboarding process 

1 Week 

Provides leadership that facilitates accomplishment of Roadrunner Food Bank’s mission by ensuring support systems and practices are in place to provide all employees the opportunity to contribute to their full potential by identifying and eliminating the obstacles and barriers that prevent this from occurring 

2 years 

Monitors employee performance using metrics defined by COO then reports findings to Director of Operations and peers.  

1 month 

Works to keep the driving team connected to the rest of the food bank, as well as the mission of the organization. 

6 months 

Provides support to staff through constant communication; constructive feedback; adding value to employee problem solving; and decision making. 

6 Months 

 

Key Result Area #2 – Fleet Management Level II 

Ensures a well maintained, compliant and operational fleet 

6 months 

Develops vehicle repair and maintenance schedules and documentation  

1 year 

Recommend acquisition and retirement of vehicles or equipment to optimize efficiency and ensure safety 

 

Negotiates, manages and submits vendor contracts to Sr. Staff pertaining to fleet 

2 years 

 

Key Result Area #3 – Compliance   Level II 

Ensures complete compliance with all applicable Federal and State laws, including record keeping (DOT, EPA, OSHA etc.). 

6 Months 

Keeps informed about pending legislation that could affect the transportation department. 

1 Year 

Conducts vehicle and driver audits, reports findings to transportation team and provides action plan when necessary. 

1 Week 

Maintaining detailed records of vehicle servicing and inspection 

1 year 

Oversees the registering and licensing of all vehicles under their management 

1 year 

 

Key Result Area #4 – Safety   Level I 

Maintains effective accident prevention program, ensure all reasonable actions are taken to prevent accidents or injuries, and ensure a safe and productive work environment 

1 Month 

Assists the management team in investigating all accidents, customer complaints and transportation delays, and helps to develop steps for prevention 

1 Month 

Conducts driver meetings on a routine and regular basis to discuss safety and potential risks. 

1 Week 

Provides equipment training to staff, monitors use and ensures proper and safe operation. 

1 Month 

 

Key Result Area #5 – Customer Service  Level I 

Focuses on customer expectations, prevents problems while maintaining availability to staff. 

1 Week 

Provide effective resolution to customer issues in a professional manner. 

1 Week 

Ensures adherence to routing structures, schedules and equipment size restrictions

Key Result Area #6 – Budgeting   Level II 

Monitors fleet expenses and assists in budget forecasting 

2 Months 

Maintains optimal utilization of personnel hours and equipment throughout the transportation department. 

1 Year 

Create and present reports generated to illustrate budget compliance and cost per mile metric. 

1 Year 

Assists with identifying external financial pressures, anticipates potential effect on the organization and takes appropriate action  

1 Year 

 

Accountability Responsibilities                     

This position provides supervision to Drivers, Driver Coordinator, Fleet Technician,  Interns and volunteers as assigned.  

 

Qualifications  

  • Effectively self-manage, prioritizing and tracking work without supervision.  
  • Minimum of three (3) years of directly related experience 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, safety guidelines, and government regulations 
  • Exceptional computer skills including the Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Must be able to travel throughout the state. 
  • Able to find solutions, move quickly, and be adaptable. 
  • Understanding of DOT Regulations 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality 
  • Must be able to document activities and organize completed forms, surveys, and project results 
  • Absolute commitment to the mission of Roadrunner Food Bank  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university 
  • Five (5) years managerial experience 
  • Three (3) years Food Bank managerial experience 
  • Class A commercial Driver’s License 

 

Employment Requirements 

ServSafe Food Safety or equivalent training from an ANSI accredited institution 

Negative Drug Screen 

Successful Background Clearance 

 

Physical Environment  

Primary work is in a warehouse environment   

Employee can be exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures. 

Frequent lifting of up to 100 lbs is required 

Required to pull in excess of 1000 lbs with a pallet jack 

Required to handle individual pieces of produce and use senses to determine the quality of product. 

The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts   

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud
