Title: Communications Manager
FLSA Status: Full-Time Salary Position
Pay: $65,000 - $68,000 Annually
Reports to: Director of Communications & Events
Description
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Communications Manager to enhance and support our organization’s external and developing communications needs. The role is responsible for developing and executing communications tactics, creating and managing content creation, overseeing media relations, and ensuring brand consistency. The Communications Manager will utilize project management skills to manage campaigns, initiatives, and cross-functional team projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Communications and Content Development
- Develop and implement communication strategies to engage key stakeholders such as donors, volunteers, general supporters, media, partner agencies, and employees.
- Oversee the creation, editorial process, and distribution of high-quality marketing and communications content for news releases, newsletters, fact sheets and other printed materials, digital media, toolkits, and other communication avenues.
- Manage and audit website content on regular intervals and utilize the latest SEO best practices.
- Coordinate with internal teams and vendors to craft compelling messaging for communication and public relations initiatives.
- Ensure brand consistency and tone across communication channels. News Media and Public Relations
- Build and maintain relationships with news media contacts to secure coverage including journalists, editors, and digital media outlets.
- Collaborate with internal teams to proactively identify and promote newsworthy content.
- Write and distribute news releases, media advisories, and other public relations materials.
- Coordinate interviews, news conferences, and media events.
- Respond to media inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Monitor news trends and changes in digital news media.
- Update media contacts for optimal outreach activities.
- Track and create reports with analysis of monthly media coverage for internal teams to use.
- Assist and participate in crisis communication planning and execution as needed.
Project Management
- Develop detailed project plans and track project timelines, deliverables, budgets, and adjust strategies as needed to meet goals.
- Organize internal teams, vendors, and external partners to keep deadlines and projects on track.
- Work cross-functionally and communicate laterally, upward and downward to keep stakeholders and teams updated as needed.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation on internal processes and procedures.
- Monitor and track performance, provide insight and recommendations for improvements.
- Identify risks and develop various strategies to keep activities on track.
Collaboration and Team Work
- Provide staffing and logistical support for event and communications needs that include fundraising, friend-raising, and third-party events impacting the work of the food bank.
- Develop strong and collaborative working relationships with members of other departments and external constituents. Collect stories, comments, images, and audio from people we serve, volunteers, donors, staff, and others for use in both print and digital formats.
- Contribute to a shared team media library and archive appropriate media assets such as stories, photos, and video elements. Participate, elevate, and execute additional key fundraising activities such as national Feeding America cause marketing campaigns, direct mail activities, regional food bank initiatives, or other funding opportunities that arise.
- Assist and take part in other department functions and activities including conducting and leading tours, giving community presentations, taking an active role in helping at non-job related functions at food distributions, etc.
- Serve as support to internal teams for email and call groups such as the Development Support inbox and food assistance calls during heavy volume months.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or other related field or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, or a related role.
- 5+ years of proven experience working with media and handling press outreach.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of effective mass communication principles, processes and techniques.
- Strong analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and organizational skills.
- 3-5 years in project planning and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Familiarity with email marketing platforms, content management systems (CMS) such as Wordpress, project management platforms (Monday.com, Trello, Asana, etc), graphic design platforms such as Canva.
- Basic knowledge of photography best practices and capturing video or audio elements for use.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong storytelling abilities and an eye for newsworthy content.
- Experience in crisis communications
- Proficiency in multiple languages including English and Spanish.
- Experience with at-risk populations.
- Previous experience working in a nonprofit environment.
Physical Environment
- Primarily an office environment
- During events, meetings, and appointments it will be required to move and perform some physical activities related to set-up, tear-down, and on-site management.
- Some exposure to extreme temperatures during outdoor events or warehouse activities.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
- Extensive computer operation with repeated finger motions.
- Must be able to move around the office and get to the equipment.
- Noise level is usually moderate.
- Extensive telephone use.
- Schedule is a 40-hour work week.
- Operates office and computer equipment.
- Travel as required by the job responsibilities
